Joint Manipulation or Chiropractic Adjustments

Brookfield chiropractor, sports chiropractorJoint manipulation, known as a chiropractic adjustment when performed by a doctor of chiropractic, is rapidly gaining recognition as a valuable spine care skill for manual therapists to provide to patients.

Adjustments or manipulation is used to restore proper motion to restricted segments in the spine or other joints in the body. It is performed by a quick correction to the joint itself, freeing any restriction in that location and allowing for a proper range of motion. MRI scans have now confirmed chiropractic adjustments create a gapping within the joint, showing this release of restriction. The power of the chiropractic adjustment / joint manipulation also lies in its secondary effects. Chiropractic joint manipulation is shown to decrease muscle tension and improve joint position sense, both of which help decrease the level of pain.

The Journal of the American Medical Association now recommends chiropractic care and other conservative care treatments before considering surgical options (read more). Chiropractors have long realized the many benefits of joint manipulation dating back to 1895 when the first chiropractic adjustment was delivered by D.D. Palmer. As with any branch of the medical field, new scientific evidence and biomechanical discoveries have led to safer, more effective forms of manipulation. At Elite Sport & Spine, we are proud to offer the standard Palmer Package and Logan Basic techniques, as well as techniques learned from the Motion Palpation Institute, a biomechanically superior, evidence-based, joint manipulation technique (www.motionpalpation.org).

Please note: We also provide low-force options if the patient prefers. We can instead utilize low-force mobilization techniques to restore motion to the restricted joints. Mobilization techniques require less force and usually do not produce a cavitation (popping sound).

McKenzie Method® – Advanced Spine Care

McKenzie Method®, also known as Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy® (MDT), is a comprehensive approach to treatment of the spine. It consists of three steps: assessment, treatment, and prevention. It is trusted and used by health care professionals and spine care specialists around the world. Research has shown the McKenzie assessment to be as reliable as costly diagnostic imaging (i.e. x-rays or MRIs) when determining the source of the problem and which patients will respond well to conservative treatment.

Assessment:

The initial examination serves to quickly and efficiently classify your condition so that an individual treatment plan can be created and/or the necessary referral to another medical specialist can be made.

Treatment:

Based on the assessment, you will be given simple, individualized exercises to perform. The goal is to educate you on the cause of your pain and why certain activities can worsen your symptoms, so you can decrease your recovery time and get back to the activities you enjoy sooner.

Prevention:
Once given the proper knowledge and tools, you are more aware of how to minimize the risk of reoccurring injury and symptoms of neck pain or low back pain.

McKenzie is beneficial for the following conditions:
